I have always cut the the patches in half. The only failures I have is applying the patch in the wrong place. Even if you circle the hole in pen it can ve difficult to see after the vulcanizing compound has dried
You can use a toothpick to find the hole again if it has disappeared, without messing up the rubber cement.
