Trek has been known to make a few decent bikes. I think they're still made in the states, or at least some models are. Some guy named Lance has had pretty good luck on their road bikes lately. I had one in the 1990's, and was quite happy with it. The guy that stole it must have thought it was something special as well. "Quality" for your intended application is a hazy concept. Your wife is not going to break anything. More importantly, which shop is going to spend time making sure the seat/stem/bars are adjusted/sized/suited to your wife? The components are probably very similar in quality.
