So I was riding my san jose for a little over a year, through snow, rain, everything. On a relatively frequent basis, I kept hearing a squeak as I was pedaling. I kept wondering, is it something hitting the fender? cranks loose? bad bb? Then it would be fine. Of course it stopped when i was coasting, so i was still so sure it was in the cranks or pedals. took it all apart again. seemed fine. next time it was raining, i heard it again. so i looked down as i pedaled. it was the inside of my shoe rubbing against the crank arm.
