I think you've misunderstood me. I've done just over 3000 miles so far this year on clipless pedals, and about 11,000 miles last year -- before that I was using toe-clips and leather straps. Most of my miles are "proper" training miles, but I still occasionally commute on a crappy bike with toe-clips and joggers.

As I said above, I'm suggesting that clipless pedals aren't "magically" safer than toe-clips, despite this perception. People who think toe-clips are far more dangerous than clipless either don't know how to use them, or have little experience with them.
