I have a problem working with those tiny multitool hex keys. Instead, I carry a set of 6 regular hex keys, and a small combo blade/phillips screwdriver both bought from the hardware store. The rest of my regular tool kit is:

Tire levers (3),
Spare tube, or 2 tubes if I'm riding out in the sticks
Standard patch kit,
Self adhesive patch kit ( it's the size of a postage stamp and cheap insurance against the glue tube in the standard kit leaking or drying out ),
Small needle nosed pliers to extract small pieces of glass or wire from a tire, or to tighten cables.
Chain tool
A dozen zip ties if riding with loaded panniers
Spoke wrench - this is the only thing on the list that hasn't been used in the last three years

And a Topeak Mountain Morph frame pump
