Are expensive saddles more comfortable?

I'm pretty casual about saddle choice... I've ridden a lot of different saddles and I was OK with all of them (except the Concour) and loved none of them. But I've always ridden cheap saddles. My current saddle is a San Marco Arami, got it from Nashbar for $20 or $30, I can't remember. It's fine, I guess.

I noticed in the recent "I don't cheap out on" thread that saddles were the #1 item worth ponying up extra for. So what's the magic on expensive saddles? I've seen enough posts from people who hated their Toupe or Arione or whatever. I just can't see why a $$$ saddle is going to be more comfortable than a cheaper, but decent, model (like my Arami, for example). Lighter, sure, with Ti or carbon rails, carbon seat body, etc. But if I'm not a gram counter (I'm not), should I really expect that a $150 saddle is going to make me want to chuck my Arami?
