I love downtube and bar-end shifters for 'for-fun project' bikes, because they allow you to swap parts around at random. You can also use them with SRAM and Campy builds, and any number of speeds front or back.

The front is always set to friction; the rear can be set to friction or indexed- even when Ive got a matched 9spd setup, however, I use friction in the rear.
