If you want to do this so you can learn, it may not be a waste of time. If you want to be expedient, then operator is right.

Sometimes I like to fix things because the journey is the destination, so to speak.

You can draw a circle on the floor by tying a string on a pencil. Anchor the far end of the string to the floor, using it as a compass. Then compare the rim to the circle. Use a mallet to bend the rim back into round.

If your labor time has value, then don't do this, because rims aren't expensive. But I've done the above, and it works.
