There's almost that many at the Seattle to Portland ride, and it's possible to stay out of pacelines while still being with a group. Especially in the first 50 miles, there tends to be a big "accordian effect" from stop to stop when heading though some of the city centers, so groups aggregate then spread out again. I got passed by many pacelines, but I stayed out of them.
