Thanks everyone. Was a bike mechanic for years in HS and college but never did wheels, always thought it was some kind of mystical art or something. Middle aged corporate manager type now and finally decided I should learn when I took a hub and rim to a guy at my LBS to put together for me.
Now you've done it... pretty soon you'll be taking apart perfectly good wheels to put them back together, experimenting with weird lacing patterns, downloading SpoCalc to figure out fantasy wheels... wheelbuilding isn't a hobby, it's an addiction, dammit, an ADDICTION!!
They're cheaper than cars, though.
