The only reason rear tooth count changes usually make more of a difference than the same change up front is because the tooth difference is typically a larger percentage of the original. For an easy example, adding one tooth to a 20 tooth rear cog makes it 5% bigger. Adding one tooth to a 50 tooth chainring makes it 2% bigger.
