Winter training for the broke student

So the guys at the shop tell me a trainer won't work with the spacing on my old steel bike, and besides I'd be overspinning on a fixie anyway. They told me to get rollers but I'm reticent to do it. I'll be able to afford a geared road bike when the season comes around in spring but I can't get it now+trainer. I want better endurance and speed in the spring and I'm committing to do the Bike Across Kansas ride in June so I want to be training now. I know the fixie people will say not to baby out and keep riding through winter but that's stop and go commuting and I don't think I want to put in a lot of training miles on the roads in January. What do you guys think? Go running and do squats? I went running the other day and it beat me up aerobically but didn't hit my muscles very hard. What should I do between now and spring training?
