Lots of Bike cops!

my wife and I have been carpooling and our commute takes us on a street that often has many bike riders as well as many cross walks. so we are often irritated driving on that street as a result. usually, I'm saying stuff like "get the heck out of the street ya freakin biker...." (just to my wife, not yelling it out the window)

traffic slowed down in our lane yesterday and I caught a glimpes of a cyclist in the middle of the road. this road is wide enough that they can ride on the shoulder/right and cars can pass. and with so many crosswalks, cars are not speeding all over the place.

I changed lanes and found out the reason for the slowdown, 25 or so cops on bikes. all more then taking the lane. I laughed.

she actually counted them, but I forget the actual number. 25 is a good guess, it was a bunch of them. All but two seemed to be in good shape. those two that weren't were kinda fatties...

anyways, just thought i'd share as we just had a 'cops on bikes' thread....

I'm sure they were. it was so nice outside yesterday, I would have loved to have been on a bike.

It was just crazy to see so many at one time. I see bike cops all the time, just not in large packs...

I got to ride with a lot of cops and firemen at the Face Of America Tour commemorating 911 back in 2002. These guys may be in shape for fire fighting and crime fighting, but it becomes apparent that there is a different level of fitness for cycling. A lot of these guys were riding "C" and "D" pace. They did complete the entire 270 miles from New York to Virginia, so they are fit.

Don't take the cyclist's fitness level for granted. It's not as easy as it looks as demonstrated by by cops and firemen's performances.

Here in Orlando when the PD has a LEBA "A" class you will see 20 + Cops on bikes during the road trip training. Usually the will split the class based on performance so that the slower guys'n gals will not interfere with the faster group on the long rides. A real blast to see the cars stacked up due to so many bike cops.
