I am glad it isn't NYC. Just think of all the memorials and wreaths left in front of the Dakota where Mark David Chapmen killed John Lennon. Both Lennon and Beatle fans would have a conniption fit.

Well that certainly is a load of crap. Seems there are much better ways to handle memorials if the community doesn't want them up forever or even at all. I hope the movement attempting to force a more reasonable handling of the ordinance is successful.

No matter how you slice it, or the whys or wherefores, 2 years is more than reasonable for this type of extemporaneous memorial. If/when the city changes the policy, I'll venture that it will result in faster removal, not slower.

It was a joke. Me riding a ghost bike when I'm a ghost. Personally, I don't believe much in either.

Then again, a ghost on a bike could likely ride through cars... That'd be pretty cool.

Even if the bike were from Specialized, Giant, Pinarello, Bianchi, Felt, Conalgo, or Cervelo?(none of that Sears or JCPennys garbage)

Especially distasteful and disrespectful if the so-called monument was dedicated to LBS product by bicycling snobs!

Durham's current policy is 30 days following a single triggering complaint. The ordinance does not have a time limit in the absence of a trigger (and I think they should have written one in - maybe a year); however 30 days is a slap in the face for the victim's family and friends. My sense of the issue here is that there is more anger about how a single person on a mission to remove ghost bikes can use the ordinance to satisfy his or her goals, real or perverse.

Right. Nothing wrong with any of that.

What blows is the fact that any one complaint from anyone (even the driver who killed the person or persons, or a non resident!) can have any specific memorial removed after any amount of time... even when the majority of the community may endorse having it up, or not care either way.

The policy, what ever it is, should never allow a single person to make the call.

The policy was put in place to create a mechanism for removing these. I agree that it is poorly designed, but the shortest interval would be 45 days, which doesn't turn out to be the case here. I suspect that the city was trying to place itself outside of being the bad guys by saying it wasn't their decision.

If you read my earlier posts you'll see that I suggested the policy be replaced with a fixed maximum time limit, with shorter limits possible based on nuisance value (to be determined by other means than a single complaint). But that's moot in this case. The memorial was up for two years, which is more than a reasonable time regardless of why it's being removed now. I'd be more sympathetic if we were talking about removing a memorial (any) within 90 days of the death, or even longer, but not two years which is the real point here.

I suspect that the city was tryng

I had no Idea of the memorial in the police hq parking lot and the knee jerk response of the city. It figures. What irks me is that a single person can complain and the city immediately jumps to action. Thanks for the petition link, Matariki. I signed it and sent it up the road.....

Roadside memorials have gotten ridiculous, I have seen ones that consisted of very dirty stuffed animals, malt liquor bottles, and joints. Memorials are what graveyards are for. If grandma dies in the upstairs bedroom of your house you are certainly welcome to erect a memorial to her but most people don't because they don't want that sort of thing on their own property.

They already have really swell bikes in heaven. And station wagons with fins and no seatbelts because nobody gets into accidents. If I get there me and Lumpy are going fishing after I get a call off to Mrs. Cleaver.
