Can you point to a single study or data point that demonstrates this causation?
It seems more that cyclists don't like the negativity of some drivers, and have irrationally associated that negativity with mistakes that hurt cyclists. The reality is that a driver that honks at you is utterly unlikely to hit you because they already saw you, and well meaning people can easily fail to check their blind spots.
No one wants to hit things (including cyclists) with their cars. It is super inconvenient and expensive to have a collision with a person, car or fire hydrant.

Yes, I agree that a driver that honks has seen you... it is the other folks on that bell curve that I worry more about.... For instance, the drivers that hardly bother looking out the window.

"And golly it is super inconvenient to put down the phone... Like I can totally text my BFF while driving, 'cause I'm like super safe you know, and oops I just dropped a french fry... and... oopsy... " "Oh, I didn't see you... "

Agreed. Kind and attentive and willing to share the public space...
The whole key here is that driving is an interactive situation requiring full attention... and anything less is an injustice to other road users. (be they driving, cycling, walking or riding a horse...)

Just as this thread comes back to life I see three story links on Yahoo about snakes living in pool noodles.

Zombie or resurrection? Undead or a lively re-examination of the question of "What can cyclists actually do about car drivers in a grumpy dwam of more or less unconsidered, semi-concious harmfulness?"As for the leg over issues I refer you to JC. "I got 99 problems but that ain't one"

There are laser rear bicycle lights in amazon that place a beam on the ground next to you, in the hopes that drivers be somewhat pushed out.
Huluwa Bike Tail Light Bicycle Cycling Projector Tail Light Warning Lamp, 2 Lasers 5 LEDs Super Bright, Water Resistant, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZYZ51SZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_QxcoBbZ09EBQ9
These wouldn't be effective in the daytime which is when you need them; bicycling at night is much safer since you're presumably light up like a beacon.
