Billboard in Western PA
Saw a billboard on US 19 north of Pittsburgh this last week with this message. I thought it was a bit odd but think that the message was powerful.
I did see a number of cyclists on this road, but it struck me as one that I would avoid - 55 mph and not much of a shoulder.

I don't know. There is something in me that does not like being portrayed as fragile. Makes cyclist sound weak. I suppose it serves to remind motorists that if you hit a cyclist with 4,000 pounds of steel something will break, but that's not fragile in my mind.

I don't like it. Too much implication that cyclist are the ones at fault when they are hit.

I would make one correction. Instead of 'in the right', to 'on the right'.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

I don't believe in looking gift horses in the mouth. This is a total freebie put up by the folks who may be the only ones to benefit from traffic accidents.
So, it's just a reminder about the obvious -- namely that people suffer greater and harder to fix damage than autos. Given the source, my feelings are based on the comparison with the alternative - nothing. Good, bad or otherwise it beats nothing, so it's all good in my book.

Maybe NYPD can post it in their break room to help confirm in their minds they are doing a good thing ticketing cyclist a day after a motorist murders a cyclist.

I like the visual, but do have a problem with some of the message. I would change the title to something like "It doesn't matter who was right. Riders are always fragile". Then on the second line of copy change it to "A boneheaded action can have serious consequences,..." Thus making it a little more neutral.

1. Depends where on U.S. 19. I once crossed U.S. 19 north of Pittsburgh (near Fredonia) during a cross-PA tour. There was not a car in sight and a decent shoulder:

2. I think the billboard would do much more of a service if it mentioned PA's 4' passing law. Last year, the sheriff of Montgomery County, which borders Philadelphia and is home to a major cycling club, started a public awareness campaign about the law, which he admitted he didn't even know existed. He held press conferences and even had hundreds of those campaign-type lawn signs printed up and placed around the county informing motorists of the law.

It has been slow going but bit by bit cyclists are having some impact on transportation policy. Many thanks to all who work on cycling advocacy.

Human nature is to deny our own weakness. None of us like it. But denial doesn't make make us stronger or more permanent than we are. Many poets and philosophers throughout the history of humanity acknowledge the fragility of life.
One doesn't need to be hit by 4000 pounds of steel to die, something as small as a microbe can easily end many human lives.
I think the advert is great. Neither drivers nor cyclists are always in the right, but it doesn't bother me that this PSA doesn't focus on "fairness" in order to advocate for my life while I'm riding a bike on the road. My pride can take that in stride.
