Well the up side of the story for me is that the person that hit me did give me a contact number at the time of the crash, offered to pay for repairs, and even called me again a couple days later to see what came of the bike repairs. So that's cool.

I'm glad to hear she's accepted the responsibility for it! Good luck.

It's those rental bikes that seat 5 and the rental delta trikes that are scariest, veering wildly all over, and the sheer volume of people that makes the MUP not useful for getting somewhere expediently. Also, some of these folks must also use the streets to get around, so I take extra care near the tourist area.

You know what's scariest? They now have rental electric cars that look like these silly golf-cart like things, so these people on vacation rent them and ride up and down the streets. Since when do our public roads have to serve double-duty as a playground for tourists?
i hate those multi seat rental bikes the worst ones tend to hog the path and do not care about about rules at all. They think they own the path and resent it when you remind them they do not.I had some bad experiences with those things in Va Beach on the boardwalk. I can't stand clueless peds either.

George Washington commuted on that route, on horseback. If it was good enough for him...

Urban arterials remain the chief source of bicycle fatalities in Northern Virginia. I hadn't heard the story you mention, but surely that one death is pretty insignificant compared to the enormous bicycle traffic that trail sees every year.

I think you might be confusing things, LikeToBike. Licensing to give instruction is a method of gaining credibility in the eyes of the public, plus you have other benefits like liability insurance. There is absolutely no attempt to push licensing or registration just to ride among EC/VC proponents, and there is plenty of opposition to it.

Richard I am glad to hear of opposition to bicyclist licensing from EC/VC proponents. I have read on the Internet of some who dream up all sorts of schemes to promote demand for EC Instruction. Schemes including associating youths' ability to obtain driving licenses with EC training, and also schemes to eliminate "incompetent cyclists" (as defined by the would-be Instructors) through bicyclist licensing.

Perhaps Rowan can explain what he meant by "Train 'em and license 'em, I say!" Maybe he was only funnin' us.

i ride on the bike lanes here in swartz creek all the time and have yet to find anyone riding dangerous in them the only complaint i have is the cops always pull up into them and i got to go up on the curb and aroubd. But around here its mostly the more experienced riders riding them and they also are single lanes too so that may help i have only had one person ride the wrong way down it.
