That is why both parties went on their way, one feeling content they had been recognized (when they hadn't) and the other content that they had given some 'random' cyclist a hard time. (when they hadn't)

A driver-by once shouted "Orale Pinche Panzon" at me, I like to think that had something to do with Lance or the Tour de France in general, it was a proud moment for me, sniff sniff...

Funny, I ride quite a bit in Pittsburgh, and I don't think I've ever heard that. Curious.

I think that judging by the vast popularity of livestrong bracelets, what those people were doing was in fact shouting support for the real Lance, not calling your friends names. They were assuming that your friends would also be Lance fans, and were expressing solidarity. Just like Pittsburghers will on drunken occasion go careening down the street shouting STEELERS! STEELERS! STEELERS! at people -- not because they have mistaken strangers for fullbacks, but in one of those inexplicable moments of fandom.

Yesterday, on my way home from work, I got a "Go Lance" from some dudes in an SUV. That's happened once or twice before. It's nice to get a little goodwill every July.

(I decided to resurrect an old thread rather than start a new one.)

I get it at work...constantly. I can't say anything, since the main culprit owns the business. I don't even ride to work in cycling clothes, just street clothes and (sometimes) a helmet. But, if he is in the department when I leave, I'm sure to hear...'there goes Lance".

The other thing I hear, um, really am asked, is..."You ride a bike to work? Lose your license for a DUI?

That one really gets to me.

My friend hears it more than I, but then his name is Lance. We had been riding once and stopped at Wendy's for a snack. We were standing by our bikes about to leave when some guy in the drive-thru lane says: "Hey, there's Niel Armstrong!"

Some people are just too stupid to try and be clever.

No one shouts that at me, but my housemate and I have taken to shouting "Go Lance go" at every full-kitted roadie who plows through the pedestrians & slower cyclists at high speeds on the MUP.

One coworker tried it. I replied,"You can call me Lance if I can call you Mario Andretti."

I'd have to use some NASCAR driver for anyone around here to understand a reply like that.

Ever play basketball in dress shoes? How about running track in your Sunday best? Just doesn't make sense, does it?
When I receive comments around our small town about "saw you in those tight shorts" or someone saying they would neve wear them, I inquire of them if they have contemplated what a seam on your crotch would feel like after 30 miles of pedalling. That usually quiets them down pretty quick on a realistic basis.

....Lance can go uphill faster than I can go down...

you realize that Mario could drive the wheels off just about anything? He won Daytona in '67.

Why not just take it as a compliment?

Ahah got one first one yesterday as I was coming out of the bike shop with my new bike shorts on.

Guys in a passing car yelled: "Hey lance, looking good!"

I just laughed, its actually kind of a compliment!

Some folks have called me that when I walk into a place but on the road it's not that polite.
We have a 3 feet law in this state and I get em passing me within 6 inchs, doing 40 in a 30.
This is Utah, home of the most ignorant drivers in the world.
I am married to one.

My three year old, Lindsay (we call her Linz for short) zips around the house on her tricycle all day. We call her 'Linz' Armstrong. She doesn't seem to mind at all.

I finally got called "Lance" by a what I thought was a Redneck! I'm spinning up a hill, wearing a RAAM jersey and this redneck in a P/U truck slows down to(I thought,) heckle me. He says "Hey, Lance, How ya doin? Hot day to ride!"

I just grinned back and said yup, sure was a hot one and I probably resembled Ullrich more, (Being a Clyde...) and he replied he "Didn't want to offend me by comparing me to a DOPER!" I was shocked, but in a good way!

Hey I am a little pudgy, the only only jersey with writing on it that I have ever considered is the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Jersey.
As a big guy in kit (lycra+jersey+helmet) on an old beater bike...I've noticed other cyclists around me don't usually offer the "nod" (runners on the other hand do say hi...whatev) I also don't get yelled at by peds/drivers...

My fiance wants to get me the jelly-belly jersey. I told her I had to earn a body fit for a real jersey (mine's plain blue&black) before I deserved one.
