According to an interview I heard on the radio, one out of ten drivers on the road after ten are legally drunk.

In Minnesota, one in ten people have a DWI on their record.

Those goofy looking cycling caps, worn under your helmet, also do a good job of limiting glare.

That is unbeleivable. I am not saying you are false, it is just a scary fact is all.

It depends on how you approach night riding (riding in the dark.) I use a 35 watt front light that really lights up the road in front of me, and a tail light that is also extremely effective. Sometimes I feel safer in the dark than in the daytime.

Problems can arise on unfamiliar roads, where obstructions can pop up all of a sudden. I am more confident on my familiar route in the pre-dawn hours than I would be on a strange road. I would slow down and take it easier in that case. But still, even familiar routes can suddenly develop a new pothole or get a fallen branch, etc., so it really pays to be alert and use a powerful light.

I agree with all of the above discussion where biking can be safer yet and more dangereous at night if you dont use the best lighting and reflective gear. Since I am cheap (sort of a running joke among my friends) I adapted hardware store products for a cheap 20 watt bike light. It really lights the road and cars notice me. I have reflector tape (SOLAS white) all over my fenders and amber/blue (heh heh) patches of reflector tape inside the rims. Double flashers (the Vista Eclipse is good) on the rear and reflector tape all over my helmet. I now ride with a 3 watt LED on top of my helmet along with my 20 watt headlamp. For a look-see of the lights and tape source, check the descriptions and photos on my web site https://www.krabach.info/bike_light/bike_light.htm Maybe these suggestions will launch ideas of your own. After reading this forum I see a few new (to me) ideas that I might adapt.
