I think the main reason I don't do that is drivers may think I'm pulling out in front of them and do something stupid (swerve, slam on their brakes, etc.). With the bike lane/shoulder, I feel as though they expect me to be there anyway so they don't question what I'm doing.
If there's no marked shoulder or bike-lane, I'll usually time my turn so that I hop in right behind the car that just passed. That way the car behind him will see me make the turn and can move over if necessary. I try not to make the turn and end up right next to a car. It freaks people out seeing me come from their side and not know if I'm going to end up in their lane or on the edge of the road. Or they might be turning right into a driveway or parking-lot right after the intersection. Could also be dangerous as well if I happen to hit a banana peel or something in the turn and end up sliding into the car.
