Critical Mass Beware!

sooooooooooo, the government has a new toy:

https://www.cnn.com/2006/US/09/12/usa....ap/index.html

basically, it's a microwave gun. a co-worker of mine got to see the actual gun yesterday, it shoots low-level microwaves that "cook" your top layer of skin, not-unlike a sunburn. but as you may know a microwave cooks from the inside out...

"If we're not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, then we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation..."

No it doesn't. Mythbusters proved it wrong, and you can too: just make some microwaved oatmeal. The center is the coolest spot.

microwaves do penetrate into materials and heat the water molecules from the inside. the reason the oatmeal is cool in the middle is that the intensity of the microwaves falls off exponentially with depth.

while this weapon is probably designed to not to actually cause tissue damage, it still seems shady to me...

We'll have to ride plastic bikes, carry no electronics, metal objects or gauges. Might be useful to have a small piece of aluminum foil -- that way when it gets hot or starts sparking we will know that the microwave gun is in use, and scatter!

Even if I was a law abiding Republican, (I am more like a radical lefty), I am not sure that I would want my country to do this to a bunch of harmless, though strange looking, fellow citizens.

Not cause tissue damage my ass. Part of the general guidelines in amateur radio is RF safety. Look right into the feed horn of a microwave antenna and notice how long your vision lasts. Microwaves are killers to the eyes. Now, some nice VHF directed RF is good for heating body tissue.

Yeah. At least with water hoses you can see the damage being done. A lot of support for the civil rights movement came from that cruel-looking footage of mostly peaceful protestors being blasted with the water. This invisible stuff ... not so much.

the instructions for making the HERF gun, using an old microwave oven, were online at one time...can't seem to find it anymore...

I really don't think this thing can be legal. Microwaves will kill your eyes.

It's called an Active Denial System (ADS), and was developed by Raytheon. It's been around for some time.
U.S. Air Force ADS and Wikipedia's entery

I think they may already be using it in Iraq, or are at least they are chafing at the bit to do so.

Seriously though, September 11th is the excuse used everytime we lose a right or someone is abused by the government. But it's "for our own good".
NOT!

So what? We just wear alumunium foil and the weapon is obsolete.

Some of the CM'ers I've seen look like they've already been bathed in microwaves...

Actually the one they are debuting, is much smaller about double the size of a machine gun, and has a tripod. Good Ole' Raytheon, I did an a/v install for one of their, for lack of a better term, sales rooms. When they were doing their preliminary run through, they had images of the patriot missle and what not, blowing up buildings, and when something would get destroyed, they had these people who were more or less cheerleaders, jumping up and down cheering for the missle. Wild place....

What I like is the Air Force leader basically saying he didn't want bad world press by using the technology against enemy troops.

I personally think he should be exposed in the American press for saying that we should use something on American citizens that we won't even use on enemies in a battlefield situation because it isn't proven safe enough.

In my mind, the perfect place to first use any weapon technology is against easily identifiable enemies who see us the same way... To use it on protesters first is silly!!!

Someone should lose sleep and possibly a job after making such a stupid comment.

Didn't Saddam say that very thing before gassing Kurds?
