When I pass a memorial on the road, I pause my thoughts for a second, and think. When I pass a spot where I know a cyclist has bit it, I pause my thoughts for a second and remember whatever I know of the incident. I don't know the person, but I pause and think about the person that someone lost and the hurt that drove that person to publicly display his or her grief.

I'd like to think that others do the same.

There's this one memorial on a steel girder bridge where a cyclist clipped one of the girders and was killed. I'd done the very same thing a year earlier on the same bridge but it didn't kill me. Seeing the memorial was a little haunting but it made me happy to be alive.
Back on topic, memorials for anyone killed around here is usually flowers and pictures etc. The city however puts up these "Fatality" signs wherever anyone's been killed in traffic.

You're basically saying that 100% of bicyclist injuries and deaths are caused by the bicyclists themselves; motorists are never responsible. Hopefully, you don't really believe that.

You aren't even amusing to argue with any more. If you want to cherry pick, go find an orchard.

If you think you're holier than everyone else, go start a religion.

Why not join the world cycling community on Wed. May 16th at 7:00 PM and join or organize a Ride of Silence in your area, the ride that honors cyclists that have been killed or injured by motorists, and who's main goal is making the road safer for all cyclists. (R of S in the southern hemisphere are Sat. May 19th @ 10 AM, for rider safety and greater visibility to the public and media)

250+ Rides of Silence were held in 2006, in 8 countries, on 5 continents. If you wish to learn more about the Ride of Silence, please visit the website noted below. Those interested in organizing a Ride can either contact me or visit the R of S resource page.

Solid foundation is needed

I am building five memorials for the the five that died in Toronto in 2006. They went up before and now they are all gone from police and the city tearing them down. I am not sure if this happens elsewhere.

I am angry, i am vengfule. I will pour the wheels of the white bikes into concret blocks. Chain the bike to the concrete and the poll and hope people will get the messedge with a plaque expainling my purposses.

The state drove me to this situation, i will not take it lying down.

I think it's more likely they are under the nearest snowbank, and you will find them in April..... The city may have also removed them, so they don't get destroyed by and/or disrupt plowing operations. I doubt the police would remove them, because it's not their job, although local criminals may be responsible. If you know who the councillor is for your area, send them a friendly email, or give them a call, and see if they know who would be likely responsible. Council members email addresses and phone numbers are available at the city website. Politicians are often though of as being a level below a lawyer, which is a level below a used car salesman, but if you ask them to s**t disturb, most of them are quite willing to stir things up a bit for a constituant, it's what we pay them to do .

I only remember ghost bikes for those, do you mean to say you put up those ghost bikes?

There are no chains that cannot be cut by the city. However with the cooperation of the city you may be able to place permanent memorials if you like. It would take an effort, and cooperative action not combative, but the end result would be much more appropriate to the situation you wish to address, don't you think?

I've seen all white bikes at pawn shops, I do not think the city is your target, at least not for the issue addressed here, preserving what may/may not be impermanent memorials.

If none of that can convince you to reconsider militant action in the name of the fallen, consider this;

Ghost Bike memorials are installed at night by other bike riders, after consultation with the fallen cyclist’s family and friends. As Martin Reis from Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists in Toronto points out, “It’s vital that the family is okay with what we do. Not nice to have the press hound a family in grief.”
Will you be calling on the bereaved to ask them how they feel about your actions & to prepare them should the police or the press come to ask if they know who did what?

I understand your anger but there may be a more constructive way to reach your goal. It's hard work but perhaps that's what you're looking for?
