I guess I'm dealing with a couple of idiots instead of just one.

pirate 02-20-08 09:40 PM

why do you say that?

Tom, you have misdirected anger.

Mike H 02-21-08 07:11 PM

I think Tom just likes arguing. From everybodies responses the CMs they are riding in seem to positive. The one I ride in stops at red lights and stop signs. On a road with two lanes going in same direction we only take up the far right lane and give the cars the left lane. Tom I do agree that in the last few years SOME CMs got out of hand and I would not want to participate with them either. So my advice to you Tom is stop complaining and try to make them better if you want or try something new like critical manners or whatever you want to call it.

You gain it by respecting the laws. You gain it by "meshing" with motorists.

Good points.

I think there are three ways cyclists can promote a positive image of riders.

(1) Cycling RACERS can promote cycling as a competitive sport, and thus get it into the pantheon of sports that have won admiration for their participants. Sure, steroids are an issue, but thats another thread.

(2) Cycling COMMUTERS can promote cycling as a healthy, cheaper, environmentally sound alternative to driving. Sho' nuff, bikeforums has a topic devoted to that.

(3) TOURING cyclists can promote cycling as a healthy way to travel and see the country, and other countries, without cluttering their rural beauty or insulting the locals by sneering at them from tour buses.

I apologize for the "idiot" statement---it was mis-directed.
