How do you know how fast the motorists were actually driving? More importantly this whole issue is not about the motorists that saw me, but about the ones that did not see me... as in the descriptions that ILTB and joejack both alluded to. The reaction time of the motorists that were behind the forward motorists are the issue... Just like the motorist that pulls around the van that is just to your left... and thought the space you were occupying was empty.
Well, you're only 2' wide, so as long as the cars were not passing the trucks parked by less than 3' of clearance you'd have enough room to dodge even without having to stop in between trucks, in the highly unlikely event that it would ever come to that.

I do not count the k-rails. In construction zones there can be dozens interlocked into one solid wall for over a 1/2 mile or more.

I don't know how fast the motorists were actually driving, but by doing repeated mirror glances, I can estimate with good accuracy how soon it will be for them to reach me in terms of where I'll be by that time. And that's true whether they're going 25, 55 or 75.

While I can't tell if the 2nd (or 3rd motorist) sees me, I can see if the first motorist is slowing down or adjusting laterally, or not. In most cases he changes lanes well in time for the next motorist(s) to also notice me and change lanes, or, if the adjacent lane is full, they indicate they've noticed me by slowing down. That's what I look for. But I'm always prepared to be overlooked from behind, even though that has never even come close to happening. But in the unlikely event that it does, that's what the ditching plans are for, which apply regardless of the speed differentials, but do depend on the details of the particular situation.

Bikes: the ever shifting stable loaded with comfortable road bikes and city and winter bikes

are you bickering with gene again about how he rides, proclaiming your superior riding techniques AGAIN, and sending ANOTHER thread off topic, serge?

Those VC tools are so tough they don't have to shoulder check, their panache and savior faire makes overtaking motorists cringe at their superpower vc abilities!

I still want to see some more video of them using a SoCal bike lane as a vehicular cyclist in heavy congested traffic.

and the one I'd like to see is the video of HH negotiating a left turn on a 3-4 lane high speed arterial with a high volume of traffic under these conditions:

I'd prefer he just throw a 50 lb. sack of sand in the trailer and leave his daughter at home, however. But I really would love to see him cross three lanes of high speed traffic at 8 mph pulling a bike trailer- now that's a video I'd pay money for- kind of like Mr. Bean goes shopping.

I admire his positive "can do" attitude, so I'd like to see a HH video too.

me too! the problem I see with HH, however, is that he seems to believe that since something like traveling across three high speed lanes at 8 mph hauling a bike trailer is something that can be done that everyone should want to do it.

I can't speak for HH, but it doesn't seem to me he thinks everyone should want to do it, as much as he believes they can do it if they really want to, and I like that. The world needs more Helmet Heads!

You're looking for disagreement where there is none.
As recently as yesterday in this thread on lane control:

Edit: apparently overcome by events and no longer an issue.

"Mr. Bean controls the lane!"

Can the videographers provide video evidence of their ability to differentiate between 4" stripes that demarcate shoulders in CA, and 6" stripes that demarcate Bike lanes, which, when well designed and implemented, provide vehicular cyclists a position to ride that is not in violation of the rules of the road for thru travel?

unsucessfully editing out riding in a bike lane as a vehicular cyclist past a driveway, and then denying it, is really quite unflattering, cyclistlorax....

Unfortunately, since HH stands in opposition to any alternative to a strict VC model it's often his way or the highway. So, I respectfully disagree- I think the world needs more open minded thinkers willing to allow for other perspectives than "if I can do it- you can do it!".

Would you have as much respect for the person who rides exclusively on bike paths and MUP's and insists that if they can do it everyone can? I think there's something wrong with both those pictures.

Thanks but old hat.

Check out the movie "Girl on a Motorcycle" with Marianne Faithfull taking an exciting bike ride. All natural leather, none of that sissy lycra when she goes for a ride!
