I'm hoping to cycle to school.

But my main problem right now is that it's a bit difficult because I have to go on a main-road. 2 lanes of ongoing traffic, and at about 45-55 miles an hour for the speed limit. It's the only road I really know of on how to get to where I need to go. Is there a way to ride such routes safely, or am I better off trying to ride around and find additional routes that might work?

This road is very busy, of course, which is why it's such a concern for me.

I'd try finding alternate routes. How far is your school? Maybe a hybrid commute(bus+bike)?

Have you looked at google maps to see if an alternate route exists? Often when people drive cars they look for roads that accommodate cars. If those people never look at a map they'll think they are the only roads for getting places. So if you look at the map for roads that accommodate bicycles, you might find something else.

Good luck.

google maps to find an alternate route. use your home address as the start, and the school as the finish dest. then, click the "avoid highways" thing.

also, www.mapmyride.com is a goood tool, and you ca dot he same sort of thing. click your home as the start, and before you click the next point, clickt he "follow roads" button, and then click the location of your school. It will give you a good route.

About 13-15 miles. I think the CCT does cover part of Powder Springs Rd, but there's a large portion I'd have to bike along the main road due to the CCT not running through that part.

I've been trying to use GoogleMap to create a route I can follow, and there does seem to be a few ways around - but there seems to be parts to the route that would just turn into a dead end if I tried to follow them.

You best bet would be getting on the bike and exploring the route. You most likely will find a pass through that isn't visible on a map.

Well, I have a month before my next college session starts, so I guess that's the best idea. Plus, it'll help me build my endurance.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

Bike lanes? Shoulders? These help a lot in comforting those that are unsure about higher speed limit areas. Also cruise it on a less busy day and see what you feel, you'll probably notice that it isn't as bad. I've been shaken up at the idea of busy traffic before but once you get out there and see that a lot of people typically give you room and are attentive even ("OMG what is that, it has two wheels, I've never seen that before!").
