Fell off bike, Helmet worked
2 days ago I bought a new Giant Sedona DX. Last night I took the bike out for a test ride after moving my accessories to the new bike (bike rack, bottle cage, lights, bell etc.). I stopped along side the brick wall on the Burnhamthorpe trail near Winston churchill (Mississauga, Canada). I just tripped over when trying to push out the kick stand. I fell towards the brick wall.
My head hit the wall but I had my helmet on. Except for the mirror on the helmet which fell off, and a few scratches on the side, all is well. I just have a bruise on my shoulder and a scrape on my knee.
Yes, this is just a simple fall and my first one in a long time. But it seems the helmet did work. I'd hate to see the result on my head had I not worn the helmet last night.

Helmets are only designed to 'work' once. Replace it.

So you were't on your bike?
People, make sure you wear your helmets when walking to or from your bicycle.

I'm in my office right now, should I be wearing my helmet? I'm on a swiveling chair, and there is also a possibility that a binder might fall off of the shelf and hit me.
Also, if said binder hits my helmet, is that enough of an impact to get a new one?

Ok... This a guy who has posted extensively about helmets, and he doesn't know the simplest thing about wearing one: helmets work by liner compression. Once a helmet has been used, that liner has been compressed, so you replace it. Or of the liner didn't compress, it had no bearing on the outcome of the accident.

Yes, you must replace the helmet. The helmet company saved your life from plummeting stationery; it would be ungrateful not to give them another $100.

That's somewhat ambiguous. You had clearly stopped, but don't say whether you were still on the bike. Most people would have got off before trying to use a kickstand. Which is perhaps why most people don't have this sort of accident - but I definitely agree that no one should treat you as if you are "most people"...
Oh, and "tripped" normally implies a state of walking or running. I fell off the bicycle while trying to use the propstand would have been clearer... I fell off my bicycle while trying to use the propstand; fortunately I was wearing a helmet and so survived! would do to replace your entire post.
Excuse me; I have to go to lie down now...

Learn to interpret punctuation! It was a question.
Regarding your response, my statement about when to wear helmets still stands (ironically).
I'd add to it, that I'm sorry you were hurt. To be honest though, I probably would've laughed to watch you try to kick the kickstand out while on the bike. But I would have stopped laughing when you fell.

If the fall was against a wall, slowly bumping against, then dragging downward, I doubt that the helmet styro was compressed or otherwise compromised - even though this is just the type of fall these helmets are designed to protect. Just a shell would have prevented the worst, the rough edges scraping on the scalp.
I am not suggesting that it not be replaced.

wait, so you tipped over on the bike after kicking the kickstand and then scraped against the wall. doesn't seem like the helmet was damaged much. I wouldn't replace it. then again, I'm one of those idiots that doesn't even wear one.

But are you sure the helmet really did prevent injury to your head? Wearing a helmet significantly increases the size of your general head area. My guess is that your unhelmeted head would have been naturally protected by your shoulder which took the brunt of your fall. Your helmet only got scratched, the contact was not severe enough to compress the liner; which to me implies that your head would have been completely untouched.

Helmets have saved my life on three seperate occasions, and now I wear them regardless of where I go. Two instances had my going ass over teakettle and landing on my head. Both of these times were in quiet areas at evening hours where i would have layed there bleeding out until morning. The third time was when i was hit by a car and flipped over the bars and landed on my head. Helmets are lifesavers, anyone who tells you otherwise should have their head checked.

Dr Sheikh points out that helmets are not designed to protect the rider in a fall which involves other vehicles. Most adult accidents involve other vehicles.
"The reasoning behind this is that when a cyclist is knocked off by another vehicle, this frequently results in the head being spun and subjected to torsional effects. One consequence of this is that they tend not to hit the ground as cleanly as children who are typically involved in low-impact, non-twisting injuries," said Dr Sheikh.

That you don't know basic facts about a safety system that you apparently rely on is probably typical of the sort of person who has repeat accidents...

We second that emotion. My experience also. My bike tumbled over and I had a direct hit of my helmet on a concrete curb. My helmet had a crack and all I had is a headache. I am a believer. I know, some impacts might be too great for a helmet. But, from my experience with my crash, it sure might help to reduce the odds of a concussion.

I wear my helmet while sitting at the computer reading these forums.
Never know when I_like_to_bike will sneak behind me and wallop me over the head with common sense.

I have even found myself wearing my helmet after the club ride en route home , in the car. / Don't see how it can hurt.
