Safety on the streets
I'm planning my Md to Fla run for 2010, I know about thefts and ignorant people talking trash. What are my chances of violence or theft along the way? I'm kind of figuring I have a 50/50 chance no matter which way I look at it.
I hiked the Appalachian Trail, and I know that in those mountains, your a hell of a lot safer there, than walking the streets of your own city. Is biking the same way even though I will be seeing more people and vehicles than I did hiking the trail? Which is one reason I am hoping to bike around cities, just to avoid trouble.

I'd say that, unless you're looking for trouble, the chances of encountering violence on your trip is near zero. The odds of losing something to theft is slightly higher but still very low. Keep your stuff with you as much as possible and you'll be ok.

You should also take a break from TV newscasts. The world between where you live and Florida is not as dangerous as you suppose.

If you're riding backroads and you start to hear a banjo, pop it to the big ring and hammer... :-)
