Lance Armstrong with Tony K.

https://www.espn980.com/audiovault/#

There is a part 1 and part 2.

I am just listening now... so not sure where Lance comes on.

Yeah, I'm looking for the transcript for his Lance interview.

Hey, if enough angry people complain (including a very well known figure ) things happen! I hope at least he smirks and changes his wording when issues with cyclists come up in the future. We're already fairly exposed out there, so I don't like seeing a larger target painted on us. Plus, some seriously crazy people are out there...and I don't want to "give them anything".

I live in Az where anyone & I mean ANYONE can carry an anti aircraft sized firearm on their hip as long as it's showing ($100 if you want to conceal it). &
I personally carry one for protection due to the neighborhoods I ride through to get from point A to point B & meanwhile this isnt meant as a threat or invitation to anyone...

If someone tried "Bonking or running me over" w/ their 2000lb car just because they took this guys advice there would w/o a doubt be one less listener to his rambilings because thats assault w/ a deadly weapon & I would w/o a doubt be in fear of losing my life becasue someone couldnt think for themselves enough to differentiate right from wrong.

This is absurd in so many ways its uncomprehensible.

+1... This is totally crazy. To say somebody else has poor taste in clothing is an offense to merit two weeks suspension from his job, but then advocating criminal behavior and injuring others is okay according to ESPN management's decisions. Heaven forbid we hurt somebody's feelings, let's hurt them physically instead!

Lance let fire with a Twitter blast ... called him an F-bird.

Prompted ESPN to take down the clip and transcript. Embarrassed the network.

Thus the invite to sit in for a chit-chat with Korn-whatever.

See Dave Moulton's blog, https://davesbikeblog.squarespace.com/

Yeah, Mr. Armstrong!

What do you do with a man like that who advocates violence against his own family?

ESPN's Kornheiser claimed his own daughter is a cyclist, which is either a lie or this man is a scumbag for asking people to run his daughter off the road.

Or maybe

The guy is just an idiot disc jockey who has to fill a lot of air time and often doesn't really think about what he's saying. Being the curmudgeonly old man is his schtick.

It was a stupid thing to say and he apologized. What more do you want?

Well, this is interesting.

Apparently as a result of Kornheiser and other radio nitwits saying stupid things about running over cyclists, the Clear Channel mothership has banned any Clear Channel "personality" from talking about anything related to cycling on their air. Here's the story.

Lance is a great cyclist, but he is weak mentally. After listening to Tony and Lance today, it seems the conversation was scripted to kiss and make up...What a waste of 16 mins.

Bob Roll's response on Versus.com is a lot more comprehensive.

Kornoler DID sound properly chastised, though. Certainly hope so.......

The trouble is, who cares if he is chastised... the damage has been done, such is the asymmetry of broadcast media. Impossible to take something back when you already put it out there.

Even if he apologized 100x times it wouldn't be as effective as him keeping his mouth shut would have been. Act in haste, repent in leisure.

Perhaps a few hundred hours of volunteer work AND an sincere apology ON THE AIR would smooth things over with me. Maybe. That and some vacation time without pay.

There are distinct limits to Freedom of Speech. He went over that line.

Fine. Then put that guy on a bike and let his listeners listen to his own advice. Simple enough.

I agree! One thing that would help make amends is for Clear Channel to grant LAB some free prime time to air some positive messages about cycling, or some real info about cyclist rights and obligations and the laws that pertain to drivers. Bringing up the historical role of cycling in the generation of paved roads wouldn't hurt, either.

on march 11 ESPN's Tony Kornheiser ranted about cyclists on his radio show and advocated running down cyclists wit quotes such as:
"Run them Down!"
"Just run them over"
"make them take a spill"
"just pop them a little bit[with one's car]"

Archived Clip starts at 31:21

As a daily bicycle commuter hearing someone using the public airwaves to broadcast incitements of violence this has me both furious and admittedly a little scared of the drivers around me.

if anyone here wants to complain to ESPN Here is a link to ESPN's ombudsman
I hope he gets named as an accessory after the fact and, charged with conspiracy to commit murder, in a criminal case, should some low-life take him up on it.

I also wonder, if he has done a public apology BOTH on radio and, on the Net.

I wrote ESPN. Here are a copy of my post and replies from ESPN:

Dear Burr,

Thank you for contacting ESPN Customer Care. We will respond to your email promptly. If your issue requires immediate attention, please contact us at 888-549-3776. We are open 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. ET, seven days a week.

Thank You,
ESPN Customer Care

Dear Burr,

Thank you for contacting ESPN and giving us an opportunity to respond, though it should be noted that Tony made these comments on a local radio station that is not owned or operated by ESPN. Yesterday, Tony spoke with cyclist Lance Armstrong privately and apologized for his comments. Lance appeared on Tony's radio show today to talk about it. You can listen to the interview at the station's website: https://www.espn980.com/.

Sincerely,

Steve
ESPN Viewer Response

--------------- Original Message ---------------

I hope ESPN will remove Tony Kornheiser from ESPN and and "try" to blackball him.

Burr, a Cyclist for 60 years and a ESPN follower.

PLEASE DO SOMETHING.

ref:00D480H6.50049mcIG:ref

And my last note!:

Thanks Steve for the fast reply.

What can we the cyclist and what can ESPN do to help us get this guy off the air?

I am going to try the AARP to say something in their newsletter.

Anything ESPN can do will help.

TIA,

Thanks for that. So many of these nitwits come and go, it's impossible to keep track of them.

One can only wonder where they spawn. The wet floors of public bathrooms, maybe?

For those who are still following this latest episode, it has indeed been mentioned on the BikesnobNYC blog. Scroll down a little.

Bikesnob has a good point. A quote from his blog:

What's essentially happening is, the "cheap joke pool" is shrinking, and now that you can't get away with making fun of minorities, women and *****exuals anymore people who like to seem outrageous are forced turn to cyclists out of desperation.
.

Yep.
