Rich Man's Justice for Hit and Run DUI offender

According to Portland Police, Hanna, 49, was driving his Porsche SUV at speeds estimated to be 80 mph when he swerved and struck Robert Skof, riding a bicycle on SW Macadam Ave, just north of the Sellwood Bridge on May 23rd. Hanna did not stop and witnesses say he sped up when they tried to follow him to get his license plate. The incident occurred at 2:43 am. The victim was transported to a hospital with bleeding and facial lacerations that were not life-threatening.

Even though he hit a man on a bike at 80 mph while driving drunk and left him for dead on the side of the road, all the charges Hanna plead guilty to today are misdemeanors. He will serve 30 days in jail, lose his license for 90 days, and pay a fine of $1,000. This outcome was part of a carefully manipulated plea deal by Hanna's lawyers. As part of the plea, Hanna has agreed to compensate the victim within one year.

According to KPTV, the judge will allow Hanna to serve his time on the weekends.

Sargeant Todd Davis of the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division said, "At the Traffic Division we take a dim view of drunk drivers who run down bicyclists and pedestrians."

It must be nice to come from a family with money that can "buy" justice for a person. Three months and the time is served on the weekends? What kind of punishment is that?

I know some families who, were they related to the victim, would ensure justice on their own after a ruling like this one.

So do I. In fact, that would include my relatives. I pity the person who hits me with their car.

I wouldn't wait for the relatives to do it. I'd beat him to death with my crutches. Or my wheelchair, if necessary.

An excellent description of what happened ...

And what can we learn from this? If you're drunk and hit somebody -- run. Make sure nobody can place you behind the wheel of your car (i.e. run, don't talk to anybody.) Don't talk to police -- let your attorney do that.

It's unfortunate that this is the way things are, but it is the way things are ...

At least it's likely that the cyclist will be well paid for his part in the deal -- if you're going to get hit, you might as well get hit by somebody with money.

There's always the court of public opinion. I think the jury's already rendered its verdict in that venue.
