Man dies while cycling across country for oil spill victims

https://www.gulfbreezenews.com/news/2...untry_jou.html
https://www.panhandleparade.com/index...spill_victims/

He was basically hit from behind while riding on the shoulder by a driver who had drifted out of his lane.

This one hits a bit closer to home than most ... he was my uncle. I didn't know him very well, but even so ...

I can't imagine how my aunt feels -- this is the second husband she's lost to an automobile accident!

The killer is Eddie R. Hogg, driving a 2006 Chevy pickup. Seems fitting, somehow.

My condolences.

Why do I have the feeling that the pickup driver was distracted (texting, dialing his cell or whatever) and that moment of inattentiveness cost a fellow human his life.

My condolences.

I hope that driver never gets to drive another vehicle again, ever. They obviously can't be trusted to use it in a responsible manner.

May I add my condolences also.

If there is any justice at all the driver will do at least some time, (doubtful but we can hope) or lose their license for a good long time. It's just sad that someone doing such good had such a horrible thing happen to them.

Very sad news indeed. It sounds like Roger was quite a charitable soul.

Because drivers who are paying proper attention don’t just drift off the road, ESPECIALLY when it is clear that a fellow human is there.

I should also mention that, according to my aunt, the person who hit my uncle didn't initially stop -- he stopped shortly after (seconds? a minute?) when he was flagged down by another driver who saw it happen. So either 1) he wasn't aware that the accident had happened, 2) he thought it was a dog/branch/pothole/whatever, 3) he was trying to get away but realized that wasn't going to work, or 4) he was stopping, just hadn't stopped yet, or 5) something got lost in the translation.

Either way, I'm glad he stopped.

My condolences. I hope your uncle finds a perpetual tailwind and slight downhill on all the roads in heaven.

I'm really sorry to hear about your uncle, my condolences to you, your aunt and the family.

It really frustrates me that the motorist had to be flagged down by another motorist to stop.

The widow should get a laywer and have the driver's cell phone records subpoenaed.

The cyclist is just as dead if hit by a reckless teenager than a distracted old fool. If the police continue to treat Motor Vehicle Homicide as a petty offense, drivers will never learn.

The local cycling community needs to take a page from the MADD playbook and hound the police, prosecutor, and courts with all the publicity they can generate.
The media WILL cover any demonstration with 30 or more participants. Use the internet, picket the police department and the prosecutor's office space. Pack the courtroom.
Talk to the press, the radio people, and the TV folks. Use political ACTION and EMOTION (show the family, distribute photos, humanize the deceased cyclist). It works.

If MADD could do it, cyclists can.

This should be done in every location, every time a cyclist is killed. Stop whinning on the internet and put a stop to leniency for these KILLERS. Call them what they are -- KILLER, not murderers but ordinary, garden variety careless, negligent, reckless KILLERS. And demand appropriate punishment for their HOMICIDE. This was not an "accident."
