Bicyclist-Motorist Communication Survey (Course Project!)

Hi All,

I’m trying to collect some feedback regarding the perceptions and needs related to the topic of ‘Bicyclist-Motorist Communication’. Yes, the description is a bit vague and intentionally so, but if you’re intrigued, then you’re probably also a great candidate for the quick (and fun!) 10-question survey.

Go here to take the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XSR6SNH

If you’re wondering, this is for an Industrial Design course that I’m taking this semester. I know everyone is especially busy these days, therefore I will be especially grateful for your time and effort. So that I can make the most of your input, please complete the survey ASAP and *BEFORE* Tuesday, February 22nd at the latest.

You’re welcome to contact me with questions/comments. Also, if you happen to know someone that might like to take the survey, please feel free to (discreetly/non-SPAMily) pass along the link. Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
-Ben

Will you post the results of your survey back here... or is this yet again another situation in which we are merely "used?"

Doesn't really matter since the survey is designed with the underlying assumption that a turn signal type gadget would be useful. Something that seems questionable, since hand signals work very well and don't require batteries...

signaling just informs your enemies of your intentions. does a pitcher shout "fastball" before he throws one?

Yes, I will try to post results.

Also, I realize attempts have been made at designing bicycle turn-signal devices. I'm merely exploring this idea as a topic for a course project. Ultimately, I would imagine such a device would not be used in lieu of proper hand signals, but *in addition* to hand-signals. Perhaps also in situations where both hands are necessary for steering.

Thanks for your input!

Uh, in spite of the way you may feel or have been treated, motorists are NOT your enemy. Road use is a co-operative endeavor.

I'd be more interested in a product/project that could judge distance away, closing speed, position in the lane, and safe passing space using cyclist-assigned settings and then communicating that to motorists and their vehicles within a cyclist-assigned radius, shutting down the motorist 'svehicle when cyclespace is violated.

I agree. We do not want some gadget on our bikes that has to be fixed. The point is to use hand signals and if you can't, then find another way to change lanes. But do not expect me to install this crepe on my bicycle.

I definitely agree. I did that once and the stupid thing broke within a week(probably because it was made of weak plastic, weaker than most bike lights at an LBS).

Yes, but they are not energetically free. I count how many times I signal and add it into my calorie budget for the day, so although it doesn't require batteries, it requires that I have more food.

Alternatively, I could tap into my Di2 battery.

OK here I'll disagree with him and balance the universe.

Hand signals don't work at night.

There, done. Now we can all relax.

They work OK for me.

It is pretty effective when you stick your arm out for a turn or lane change.

And if you really want to get respect, use a blue blinkie.
