I suspect it has something to do with a higher degree of separation of bicycles and faster traffic. I tried to dig up Dutch statistic but to no avail. Alcohol (and other drugs) seem to be a common cyclist killer everywhere.

Alcohol is also a venomous snake attractant.

DNR: 60% of snake bites are alcohol-related - wistv.com - Columbia, South Carolina |

So no back-country trail riding while drinking without a helmet. I think statistics show that 132% of all drunk cyclists on trails either hit their heads or get snake-bit. Due to HIPAA (medical privacy) laws it is hard to determine the numbers for certain tho.

Why dont we separate fact from fiction and other "studies" that are mainly preconceived. Remove all the emotion and wether you "look good" wearing a helmet, and you have the following hard facts.

Will helmets prevent death or injury if hit by a car doing 60 mph------------------no.
Will helmets prevent some injury in low speed accidents---------------------------yes.

JoeyBike: LOL !!

rydabent: Exactly!-- well put

I met a man who luckily escaped death when struck from behind by a distracted driver. The reconstructionist and the driver confirmed that the speed difference was about 40 mph. The carbon bike was totaled. The rider suffered two cracked thoracic vertebrae and one cervical. There were other injuries as well.
The back of his helmet struck the upper windshield frame and was almost completely crushed. Had it not been for the helmet, he would have certainly died (imagine getting hit with a substantial steel bar on the back of your head travelling at about 60 ft/sec). No doubt the blow was a 'glancing' one as no helmet I know of would have saved him had the blow been normal (90-degrees) to his head.

Question for all: Would you buy a new television that was shipped in a box without Styrofoam padding ? ;o)

ftfy, to be more accurate.

What does "ftfy" mean? (consider me dense)

fixed that for you

alternate: fify: fixed it for you.

This past weekend I totally biffed the ultra short but scary downhill run out back of the shop. Tucked and rolled--amazingly dramatic bike over body shoulder roll. Got applause from someone waiting for someone visiting a neurologist. No helmet, no head injury. If I'd been wearing a helmet, I could have died!

rydabent 07-08-14 07:42 AM

Good advice!

Dont use your bare head as a brake pad!!!!

And it's the same thing with motorcycle helmets as with bicycle helmets, motorcycle statistics prove they save lives and reduce the risk of injury. Thus if it is proven statistically that seatbelts save lives and reduce injury and they're required by law then so should motorcycle riders and cyclists be required to wear helmets.

you cant be possible serious when comparing those

airplanes have seatbelts, yet they dont help when your plane crashes, therefore seatbelts are bull****, right?

Serious? you bet I am when statistics PROVE that wearing a bicycle helmet while riding a bicycle saves lives and reduces or eliminates head trauma. So my comparison, that you're too ignorant to understand, is about the laws for cars and motorcycles, and since you brought it up airplanes, require in some states for MC's and all states for autos and all aircraft on takeoff and landing that evidence proved time and time again they do save lives and reduce or eliminate head trauma, back to the helmet issue, are required by law that the law should be changed to make it a requirement to wear a helmet while on a bike since the evidence clearly points out that they do save lives and reduce or eliminate head trauma. Of course this is as it applies in the USA.

Someone might think that a few posters on this thread are so hard headed that a helmet could not possibly make the slightest difference since nothing can penetrate such a dense noggin.

Helmets seem to have worked pretty well so far in the TdF, as they definitely have gotten a lot of on road testing.

Have they worked well in the TdF? Have there been fewer head injuries since 2005 (the last year I saw anyone ride a stage sans helmet).

The most recent death in the TdF was in 1967 as far as I can tell.

If and when I ride in the TdF I'll be sure to wear a helmet.

OH NO, someone with a common sense application...this will not go down well with the bare headed knuckleheads around here.

LesterOfPuppets 07-19-14 07:38 PM

Common sense, circa 2004. :)

What percentage of the crashes in this year's TdF would have resulted in fatalities if not for helmets?

So if the 144 fellow countrymen wore helmets on the plane, they would have survived right?

or only if they crashed in the usa?

you repeated a crash with and without helmet and in the latter you died?
