Now *that* is a bike lane fail

Actually, the speed bump sort of makes sense; if you just stop the bump at the edge of the bike lane, you'll have cars cutting over into the bike lane to avoid part of the bump. OTOH, curb-separating the bike lane for 50 feet or so before the bump would have made more sense.

That is what happens when things are done just to be done.

It looks a lot like the bike lanes in Eugene, OR. except for the barricade. That was inspired.

Agreed, a while back I called and talked to the Traffic Engineer here in St. Petersburg, FL and was told that the reason that most of the streets that had had bike lanes installed on them was because they "fit" on those streets. In most cases that appears to have been the only qualification.

oh, russian bike facilities.

well, at least they're trying. I'd give the city planners there kudos in attempts to normalize bike traffic as transportation, traffic in Moscow is lousy. Zhiguli.

Here's a video of the lane that 'tmpttt1' posted a while back:

I still can't believe how narrow and useless it is.

somehow I'm not holding Areoflot to the same standards as domestic puddle jumpers.

Its' such the Red Scare - maybe there's a renegade nuke in the bikelane.

. I suspect moscow bike facilities will improve over time as the bicycle becomes normalized for transportation even there.

Not to mention the wheel sucking storm grates and parked vehicles.

I rode the "Grand" Canal in Phoenix the other day and I swear they must have used the same engineering firm, gates across the whole width of the trail at least every half mile if not more frequently. In one humorous case they needed a wider gate so they made sure to add extra pavement for the locked gate but trail users had to get off and then back on the paved dealing with a 3" lip. Well at least if that gate ever does touch the ground it's got pavement and not dirt to deal with.

Notice in the Moscow vid, there are cyclists choosing to use the sidewalk. Not altogether unwisely...
