Brooklyn Cyclist, Victim Of Brick Attack, Speaks Out
https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/12/...ck-speaks-out/
Four months ago, Stephen Arthur was just biking home from work when he was hit in the face by a brick.
No one has been caught and nothing has been done.
Arthur believes his attackers took advantage of a flawed design. He has now reached out to the Department of Transportation and to City Councilwoman Letitia James, who promises renovations to the fence in the near future.

The attack sickened me. The ignorant, racist comments attached to the linked article depressed me. I'm just a depressed sicko now.

I have a personal rule that I shall not read comments attached to news stories. The comments section is where all the ignorant, bigoted keyboard commandos hang out. I refuse to give them the attention they so desperately crave. Yes, there are some good people in the comments section, but the stress and depression caused by having to read the BS barfed by the idiots makes it not worth it to me.

freight, I can understand you distaste; you're exercising your control over what enters your life, goodonya.
I can't seem to avoid it, though; it seems, like seeing the proverbial train wreck, that I just can't look away. I feel the need to 'check the pulse' of the people who respond to news stories (my way, I guess, of gauging where the society my kids will inherit STANDS) -- but yeah, these were pretty bad, I'm talking post-Civil-War stuff!
I don't agree with, or condone racism (let's call it what it is, not bigotry, bigotry isn't synonymous); I do, however, have a problem with a group of people who get together and say collectively, "You think we're like 'this'? We'll SHOW YOU THIS!" And then they proceed to act out and VALIDATE the prejudices they are railing against. Doesn't add up to me, to BECOME what you've been WRONGLY accused of being.

I used to feel the same way about the trainwreck that is the comments section. I had to check it out several times a day to see what kind of people I was living around. The racism was just as bad as the Nazi-esque views towards the poor and disabled that were just downright scary. These people fail to realize that all it takes is one bad accident or illness to put them in the same position as those they hate so much.

Me too, and what's even more frustrating is that there isn't anything I can do to change their attitudes. All I can do is try to set a good example and not act like the idiots in the comments section. Not that I have to try that hard, believe me. Their attitudes are repulsive and go against everything I was brought up to believe. They also go against common sense, which unfortunately is no longer common.

And there are places in this world where they can be made, but where people wouldn't even think of making them. I'm not sure when we became so mean-spirited as a nation (let alone why), but we can't deny that we have so become.

I don't think we ever had a golden age when meanness was rare in this country. However, I do think it is much more common today than ever as well as much more geographically widespread. Hopefully, it is one of those pendulum things and we are about to move back towards more civil behavior.
