To be honest, protected bike lanes make me more nervous than riding in the street. I've had kids arbitrarily run into the bike lane from the curb towards their vehicle. I've had vehicles use the protected bike lane as part of their 3 point turns -- the wall of cars makes the vehicle impossible to see until they inject themselves into the bike lane. Car doors extend well beyond the buffer between the parking area and the bike lane.
