The estimated cost of motor-vehicle deaths, injuries, and property damage in 2012 was $276.6 billion, a 5% increase from 2011.

I wonder if the increase has anything to do with the growing obesity epidemic in America. Obese people are much more likely to die in a car wreck (https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/201...n-car-crashes/), and every year we have more obese people. Obviously, this is unlikely to explain a one year bump, but we should be seeing a continuing decrease as cars get safer and safer for their occupants.

The best reason for cycling is that pedaling a bike is the closest a human being can get to flying as a bird flies, and that kicks ass.
But yeah, not killing ourselves and each other with dangerous machines is another good one.

ugh move closer to the water... why can't we build more aquable cities???
on a semi-serious, semi-related note.. a canal runs thru our city and if you wanted to you could paddle (or swim I suppose if you have a good immune system) up and down to your destination, and in the winter its an international draw as "the world's largest skating rink". It also happens to have a MUP on either side of it as well.

I used to canoe the Anacostia. Problem is you max out around 4 mph.

With car safety improving (structural improvements, airbags, etc...) more fatalities must mean more collisions. If there are more collisions in total, there are probably more collisions with cyclists too. In these, the motorist usually winds up unhurt.
