After starting this thread a while back, I had run a cheap camera for a while. This improved my own behavior. I found out that there were some technical limitations associated with the battery life and quality of recording. So that didn't last. But last week I had an encounter with the police that made me want to reconsider and run a camera once again -- hopefully a better quality one.
I was hit by an unmarked police car going the wrong way with lights on, but no siren. I legally turned a corner and realized I was in the path of a vehicle coming straight at me. To make the long story short, we were able to avoid a head-on collision, but a collision did happen. I escaped with no serious injuries and there was no big property damage. However, when other police showed up on the scene to take our statements, this was pronounced a no-fault accident. When I asked the officer responsible for the report whether there was breach of protocol when an emergency vehicle proceeds the wrong way without a siren on, I was told flat out that it was not required by law. I looked it up and it's a lie.
This isn't even a blip on the police misconduct radar in general, but having evidence would have been more helpful in filing complaints and holding individuals accountable for their actions -- especially those in position of authority.

seafood - AFAIK, every police dept in the US has an "internal affairs dept". that's who you want to talk to, and file a complaint with. if you're not happy with that it can be escalated further, but that's where you'd start.

FWIW battery life is my main issue too, so I'm trying out a Garmin VIRB. It claims a 90 minute battery life and it's $118 on eBay right now (discontinued). I'll have a 90 minute one way commute next year so I'll need the extra runtime.

We're still in the 'bleeding-edge technology' period. I expect that a couple of years from now, the products will be sleeker, perform better, cost less, etc. For now, these are the front/back camera combos I'm aware of:
- Products | Cycliq - front/back camera combo with integrated lights
- RIDEYE FRONT & REAR COMBO ? Rideye - front/back camera combo
I don't own either of the above. I'm not ready to purchase yet. I'll be watching developments closely ...
