So bought 2 POC's and 2 Giros of amazon. Lets see how they fit/look.

i've been riding with a giro synthe... but giro's fit my head well. was a good idea to try on a few!
|
I always ride with a helmet on. I might consider not wearing one if I was a model in a cycling apparel commercial and the director wanted to showcase the matching caps as part of the collection. Then I'd probably take the helmet off, set it on my stem and try to perfect my bidon flip while doing synchronized climbing with some riding buddies.

Does this count? If so, it was my first helmet. (No, this is not a scene from Sleeper) |
The other day, as I was leaving work, I had my arms full of cargo - so I put my helmet on my head and headed for the door. Ran into a colleague who looked at me and said (with no trace of humor or irony), "Did you ride in today?"
Naturally, I replied, "No, I wear this all the time. Better safe than sorry." |
If I am riding clipped in, I wear a helmet.
If i am just taking my commuter bike with flat pedals to the shop to pick up something - no helmet. |

Ok joking, but the question is, how often do you wear a helmet? So going from I wear one literally every time I ever put feet on a pedal, to I dont even know what a helmet is and I never owned one, to somewhere in between. And before this becomes a crucifixion, of course I know and agree that helmets are super important and safety should be the first concern for all riders.
And lastly, what is the current helmet you ride with on your road bike? Or the best helmet you ever had if you currently dont use it? I know of a cyclist who died because he fell while STATIONARY and hit his head on the sidewalk. It's probably extremely bad luck, but a helmet is cheap. |
I generally always wear a helmet for road and MTB and I'm a great believer in advocating their use. However, when in Amsterdam visiting my kids who live there, I don't. Hardly anyone does there and I don't bother either - don't have a helmet or any cycling gear for the fixie bike I keep there. Which is weird given I'll wear my helmet for even a short trip at home. It does seem that leisure and commuter cyclists tend to wear them less wherever I go, some do, many don't kinda thing. I haven't seen anyone not wearing a helmet at a Club ride or any group training ride I've been a part of since the 80's. Back then, I only wore mine on race day because it was compulsory.

You just bought FOUR helmets? No wonder I can't find any in stock.

So tried both POCs. Although they seem to offer slightly more protection (thats me guessing judging solely by looks), and the overall quality seems higher, they make me look like the little mushroom guy from the super mario brothers. Ended up settling on the Giro Cinder Mips. Fits well, super ventilated and nice color. Also at 160, it was cheaper than the POCs. And best of all, i dont look like a mushroom head. Will update once I actually use it on a long ride.

Ok, so at the risk of being ostracized forever from this forum, I'm going to say the truth anyway. Besides when I was a bike messenger and only because of liability issues to my employer, I have never worn a helmet........god thats going to hurt. I feel like someone just threw something at their monitor after reading this :roflmao: .
BUT, being older, and wiser, and having kids and a wife that is like I will buy you any helmet you want as long as you wear it, I am now going to invest in both a MTB helmet and road helmet. Sooo, suggestions? That Giro Ionos seems sold out or unavailable everywhere. The POCs seem a little too pricey, unless someone has a site where its decently priced (like $120 MAX). My wife is cool, but she aint that cool. |
Maybe not as old and wise as you then.

Update: Giro Cinder Mips felt great. Paired it with a cycling cap, and its nice. Albeit, only helmet I ve ever really worn, but so far so good. Great adjustment, good fit, looks good, cant complain so far. As for the MTB helmet, I went with Giro as well. Its a no frills Giro Radix Mips. I tried a Bell Sixer Mips as well, and although it looked beefier and looked better, it just didnt sit right. The plastic retention system was not comfortable at all. The Giro Radix fit better, felt lighter and was cheaper (95$). The only other helmet i was considering was the Fox Speedframe Pro, but good luck finding that. I could not find a Large or even a medium in ANY color anywhere on the internet.

I too have helmet

Last summer when I was biking in forest I heard of some kid who hit a tree while doing a jump and went unconscious. The impact went completely through his helmet
. Stay safe out there folks. Wear a helmet and use lights. |
People in NYC wear masks but not helmets riding in the streets. Makes a lot of sense right?
|
I have been using a helmet for so long that my 44 year old son has never seen me on a bike without one

:deadhorse2: I heard, With all the gun violence increasing - I should wear my bulletproof equipment when cycling which, I heard, also protects me from crashes with all the distracted drivers when cycling. who, i heard, are more prevalent than drunk drivers when cycling and the police, I heard......... Move it to Politics & The Helmet Religion Forum (when cycling). Stay safe our there. Life is dangerous when cycling. Play at your own Risk. :thumb: https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...14530fd97.jpeg And don’t get me started about what I heard about children’s outdoor playgrounds, yes = when cycling. sometimes I hear the strangest things - when generally cycling. |
I wear mine all the time, even when I am not riding a bike. You can't be too careful.
