Crank Bros Three Hole Adapters and Shimano SPD Cleats?

Anyone know if you can swap the CB cleats for Shimano ones on these? I'm hoping to use my road shoes & keep my A520 pedals and not ice skate with the SPD cleat without having to buy new two hole shoes. Thanks!

AFAIK, Crank Brother cleats use the same two-hole pattern as SPD mountain/touring pedals so there is no reason the Shimano cleats shouldn't fit if the CB cleats fit.

Not sure how you would secure the cleats. The ones you are looking at have the cleats bolted in from the back (the cleat itself is threaded) and the SPDs you'll try to mount won't be threaded so can't mount that way.

How about these:

And get "pontoons" like these:

Good catch. I missed that point entirely. All i considered was the hole spacing.

I see what you mean with them being threaded the other way. I wonder how thick it actually is where the bolts go thru where the cleat is attached? My shoes do have 2 & 3 bolt attachments, but whether or not I'd have enough bolt length to attach the SH51 cleats thru them I don't know. The Shimano pontoons may not work - I think those are only meant for SH71 cleats. I may just have to break down & get new shoes if the CB adapters don't work. Worth a shot though. Thanks guys.

You could find longer screws. You can also long screws and cut them to length with a Dremel with a cutoff wheel, etc...

Looks likethose screw in from the back side, no head in that one.
the plate that goes in the shoe is threaded , the flat head screws clamp thru the shoe sole.

you buy those things already or is this just a C&P off the web?
flip one over and let's see the other side..

if not, How about the Pontoon type SPD cleats, for road shoes , they are external, screw on the bottom..

I can walk normally on recessed cleat shoes , my shimano TO 92 shoes share the upper
with their road shoes of the same era, so look roadie, not MTB, if that matters.

its their Touring niche shoe..

No I have not bought them yet. I'd be willing to try the pontoons, but I think they're set up for the SH71 cleat, & those won't work for my pedals. Plus, I believe the 71's are smooth on the back side & don't have the sawtooth pattern like on the back of the SH51. Long story short, I've got Shimano road shoes & 105 pedals now, & I'm wanting to go back to standard SPD pedals. Plus, I wish now I'd not got rid of my touring shoes, lol.

Remind me to check whether I've still got some of these sitting around. I don't remember how CB secures the cleat to its backing plate, but I never tried to take them apart, either.

There are some narrow, thin "dog bone" shaped backing plates with threaded cleat mounting holes that are used with some SPD compatible shoes. These are both thinner and smaller than the 4-hole backing plates supplied with most SPD shoes and I wonder if there is room for them on the other side of those adapter plates.

If you think they will fit, I have a couple of surplus sets and I'd be happy to give you a pair.
