Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay ?

I've been using Shimano SPDs but was thinking of getting a set of the red speedplay zero stainless. I never used them before and don't know anyone who does... Will the cleats for the Speedplay fit my Shimano shoes that were using the SPD cleat?

I like the floating options on them, are they really easier on your knees?

If you shoe only has the 2 holes for the SPD cleats, they won't fit. If they also have a 3 hole system, then yes they will fit. Float is easier on the knees.

They are head and shoulders above other pedals for your knees. The cleats come with three bolt adapters that allow you to use the cleats on your three bolt shoes.

If you're coming from SPDs and want to keep your walkability, get some Speedplay Frogs. Crazy float, easiest entry/exit I've ever used and you can walk normally.

I have Zeros and LAs. Love them both. My shoes are the carbon Shimano. Sorry, I'm too lazy to get up and find the model. The cleats fit fine.

Walkability? I don't recommend them for a hike but I manage to get out of my building and go into quick stops, etc. without problems. They make a cover for them.

I switched from SPD 5 years ago. I have tens of thousands of miles on those pedals, I love them!

Great, thanks, I'm going to get them. My

Shimanos have 3 bolts. I was going to get the red but saw a pair of used ones on eBay. ...not so red anymore. I'll stick with gray...

I have the LAs and have considered replacing them with the Zeros mainly because everyone seems to love the Zeros. I don't think I need to adjust the float and like that the LAs are easy to clip in and out of. What advantages do you think the Zeros have over the LAs?

I wouldn't call it an advantage. Difference, yes. Advantage, no. The Zeros are harder to get into and out of. It was a minor transition but I got used to it by about 400 miles. Also, perhaps the Zeros loosened up. I switch over between the Zeros and LAs and don't notice much difference at this point. I will not buy the LAs though because I prefer the limited float and harder action of the Zeros.

Don't think twice about getting Speedplay's. You wont regret it. Even if you gotta change shoes to do it.
Speedplay's require 4 holes to fasten the cleats into your shoes. I have 3-4 degrees of float set- which I absolutely love!!!. Also the fact that you clan clip into both sides of the pedal is a no brainer..... GET EM!!!

Bikes: bone stock Trek 1.5 with bontrager approved bottle cage!

Speedplay's are definately the way to go! Takes a bit to get used to walking on them (wich you will get used to) but uh, I usually where them to bike, not to walk around the mall in.
