Is Baden Cooke still in town? I thought I saw him walking along the beach at Port Melbourne. |
I also saw Nathan Bucksley jogging along St Kilda Beach, flexing his lats. :p
Looks heaps bigger -- maybe he's put on muscle coz he's gunna play more up forward this year. Says here he's 186cm and 91kg. I wouldn't have thought he was that heavy http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/a...llingwood.html |
Good old Collingwood forever...... I hope they do play him up forward.
I love Bucks nearly as much as Eddie does. Dan, whats the goss on Bucks? They reckon he's as professional as they come in the AFL. And whats that rumour about Bucks and CM? |
Richmond supporter (go Royce), and I'm not a huge fan of Bucksly. I reckon he practises in front of mirror new ways to pose after he kicks the ball, :p like Dermo does in the Whitten games
I reckon Sheehan always rated him correctly in those silly top 50s. A few years ago when people spoke of him as the best player in the comp, etc, etc....gimme a break! I reckon, at BEST he was only 75% the caliber of Carey, Ablett, Lockett, etc |

I wouldn't have thought he was that heavy http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/a...llingwood.html I think AFL players tend to be quite thin and reedy (with the exception of Plugger and that guy (Withnall?) who used to play for Carlton). When the Wallabies were in Perth one year for a test, they used the WC Eagles training facilities and George Gregan was able to bench press more weight than any of the Eagles were capable of. Players always look a bit fatter on TV as well (except Warney). When you go and see a football match here it's amazing how tall and thin they look compared to what you see on TV. |
Different sport, different needs. AFL players aren't reedy, they just aren't as boofy as league players. AFL is quicker with more running than league. The rugby and league guys need to be stronger because they use their boofheads as battering rams. Ones not necessarily fitter or better than the other, they have specific fitness to suit the needs of the game they play.
Rugby players probably have stronger eyeballs than other codes, league players have tigher blurt muscles (at least when Hoppiate was playing), and soccer players would have well developed tear duct muscles for crying when they fake injuries. Lance Whitnal has slimmed right down now. Still big, but not fat anymore. |

She used to try to get me to barrack for the tiges (didn't work) and brought me a Richmond guernsey with number 4 on the back. Even though I was Collingwood I'd wear it sometimes, because our town was the Tigers in the local league. Unfortunately Hart was retired and Geoff Raines was then no 4 at Richmond. All the kids in my school and footy team used to reckon Raines was a poofter with his pretty boy haircut. After that the jumper only got worn to footy training in mid winter when it was really muddy:D |

Tackling isn't as important in AFL because the two teams don't face each other line to line because there's no offside. AFL players have to be able to jump too, so extra muscle wouldn't necessarily help. My wife worked in the ED at RPH and she said the Aussie Rules guys would come in suffering from greenstick fractures caused by not landing properly after attempting a mark. |
Well from a purely eye-candy perspective, AFL players and soccer players have much more attractive physiques than thugby players (it's always a worry when someone's neck is thicker than their head).

I dont really have any goss on Bucks other than having met his wife on a number of occasions. Shes all class. He is a freak in that he can deliver on either foot over 50m. It can hurt teams. Not many guys can do that even today. Most of the boys will be looking huge this time of year. Generally they will be in the middle of a fierce weights rotation. Most of them will carry 4-5kgs in muscle into a season and the grind of the week to weel will strip that off. They will be looking for their ideal weights around July. Whitnall is my vintage. Peaked at age 17. Absolute freak. He could eat pies all day as kid and his body would deal with it. They slow your metabolism and pump you full of creatine and the rest and that has been a disaster for him.
JM George Gregan is one of the most powerful athletes in the world. You do realise this? His power/weight ratio is off the charts. He IS a freak. Most AFL guys would love to beef up but getting turned inside out by daniel wells and made to look like a fool in front of 50,000 folk isnt fun for anyone. Muscle is over-rated in AFL.Power/weight is critical but its more becoming a game of 'keepings off' so speed and accuracy of ball movement is more critical than say 10 years ago. Cousins (WCE) has the perfect physique for the game. Sheahan is a turd-burgler :D |

Rugby Union is a game for all shapes and sizes. AFL is a game for tall thin blokes, Paul Kelly, and the little vicious little guy who used to play for the Bulldogs. |
