Beach Cruisers Do you love balloon tires and fenders? Do you love riding the simplicity of a single gear and coaster brakes or a single gear cluster? First time bike rider. 450lb :(

Hello!! This is my first post and first time looking into bikes. I have this recent obsession with beach cruisers.. Maybe because I spend a lot of time in Cape May, but maybe because I am on a weight loss program and just think it would be a great way to loose weight! My only problem is there is so much information online and whatnot, I don't know anything about a bike that would hold my weight.

I would like to start off cheap to begin with to see if this is truly something I like... Would a boxstore cruiser work for me ? Would I be able to upgrade it as time went on, or should I got right into a custom build ?

Thanks for the help!! BTW I'm 6" 2 and 445 LBS!

Welcome to the forums! I think most (if not everybody here) will guide you away from a boxstore beach cruiser.

I'd head on over to the clydesdale forums and ask some questions there. Plenty of people who have done the same thing you are doing now.

Good on you! I'm sure there are plenty of people who will tell you everything you need to do. For the most part, ignore them. Take it all in and decide what works best for you. Everyone is different. Don't fret about comparing yourself to other riders, or whether you're doing something "right" or "wrong." Your own body and mind will tell you.

Have fun!

You might want to look at E-bikes that are pedal assist. They have a small motor that you can add adjustable power to help you. They will keep you out longer and will be a lot easier on your knees. My friend is 325 and trying to lose weight but he can only ride his Trek for about a mile and then he gives up. On my e-bike he can ride a lot longer and gets more exercise because he will pedal a lot longer. As you get stronger and lose weight you can reduce the amount of power all the way down to zero.
