Electra Townie Serial numbers

Anyone on this site know of a web site or have personal knowledge as to how to de-code an Electra Townie serial number on bikes built befor 2014 when Trek took them over. The "Trek-Townies" have Trek serial numbers and are pretty easy. I've not found anything on the earlier bikes.
