Can you really walk 6 mph (10 min./mile) pushing a bike up a steep hill? Pedaling is almost always faster than walking. Even something like a 24x32 giving a 20 gear-inch gear at 75 rpm will produce 4.5 mph and I doubt you can walk even that fast pushing the bike uphill.

No, I don't think you can. But that's not to say you still can't conserve energy by walking. I wouldn't want to walk 6 miles but I might take the last 1500 meters on foot. Gran Fondo sounds intense. Like the ride over Washington Pass (N Cascades Hwy 20) here in the PNW.

@cale, if the OP wanted to walk hills, they'd be asking about it on www.walkforums.net, doncha think?
Haha, what was that? Just got back from justbreath.org.

+1 look for a cyclocross crankset, or a smaller pair of chainrings. What's the min that your ultegra crankset can take?

True, with the dominance of makers pushing 11t top cogs , non peloton racing Pros wont need a 50mph finish line sprint

so put a double on that is smaller 46 - 30 is an Option VO. white industries VBC [ perhaps inner 2/3 of a road triple]

Looks like that stock crankset is 110BCD, so 34T is the bottom, unless you want to pay $58 for a specialty 33T.

Use the road shifter, mt derailleur. At least how that works with 10 speed.

Although the 74mm BCD inner position takes rings down to 24T which is 30% lower.

You can also combine wide range and narrow spacing like 53-39-26 x 13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-26 which won't be possible with doubles until we pickup a few more cogs in back.

Be careful with Shimano triples, the newer Tiagra and Ultra don't have a 74mm BCD, it's something weird like 92mm. You can't get smaller chain rings, 30T is it. The Tiagra 4503 and the 105 5703 have 74mm BCD and they'll take a 24T min.

I run a 50/39/26 and 13,15,16,17,18,19,24,28 on my road bike. Here in Colorado it gets steep and we start our rides a 5,000ft. Nothing better than sitting and spinning past my clubmates who are standing and mashing with their compact double with 34x28 min gear.

What's that 192%, wouldn't an overall summary statistic be like 103.8/25.1 > 400%?

That's the front chainring range.

Don't know about the others but IRD do not recommend their 46-30 crank with 11 speed rear ends (I asked).

The cable pull ratios changed for 11-speed so it doesn't work with 11-speed. And for 10-speed road, you need to use a 9-speed mountain derailleur.

If you have the 105 RD-5800 you could convert it to a super long cage rear derailleur and use a 11 speed 11-40 cassette.
