Caged bearing change.

So my girlfriend asked to change the bearings off her old bike. Bearings need to be changed on the rear wheel. And I have never changed this type of "caged" bearings. So In what direction should I add em.

This way

Or this way.

Like in the upper pic. Segmented side of the ball retainer pointing into the cup.

How many balls do those retainers hold?
Most of us just use loose balls, and grease to hold them in place.
You can fit 9 loose ones.

If you put them in the wrong way, it should be evident pretty quickly when you try to turn them by hand.

+1

Just put same sized balls. For the rear wheel, most probably 1/4" (6.35 mm) and probably 9 in each side. Works better than caged bearings.
