Pardon my ignorance but what is this??

So I just removed the crank that came with my bike and installed one with smaller chain rings. The package came with this plastic thing shown in the pic from the link just above the bolts. I have no idea what this thing is. I did not see anywhere I could have used it. Can anyone inform me as to what it is?

I added a pic of it if it worked.

No idea, but maybe it's the "chainguard" mentioned. If so, it would go between the right crank and outer chainring. See if there's some sort of receiver for it there.

OTOH- you have all you need without it, so feel free to set it aside for future reference, in case the need becomes apparent later.

Nope its not but you have just solved another of my problems. The crank came with this round insert on the inner chain ring. You have just told me what it is. Thank you! I will not reinstall the chain guard. Still not idea on the mystery plastic thing though.

I guess it is safe to assume no one else knows either.

As I said, save it someplace in case a need arises. Otherwise, if you don't miss it in any way, it doesn't matter what it's supposed to be. OTOH, you might ask the seller, who might even give you an answer since it was shown front and center in the sales photo.

That sounds like a plan. Thanks

It's not shown on the EV, so it's not part of the crank.
It's not mentioned in the SI either so it's not needed to install the crank.

It's probably a henwey or a dikfur.

Does it say anything on it?

It does not say anything other than its recycled. I had just noticed that it has a slit in it length wise and the parts that project out are hollow. It looks almost like a cover for something or maybe a chain ring cleaner or something.

Looking at it, I wonder if it is some sort of guide designed to help you set the derailleur at the correct height

^^^That gets my vote. It looks like the arc is probably the same circumference as the big ring. Can't tell the thickness. In lieu of other more sensible answers, I align myself with alcjphil

I do believe that makes the most sense yet! Currently I think I am about 2 mm clearance. It seems to work.
