I would advise your friend to acquire Campy Record carbon components to go with the LOOK 585. It sounds like your friend can afford it
I recommend double 10-speed combo: 53-39 double ring and 12-27 cassettes since your friend won't be riding mountain roads and he has a very efficient LOOK 585 frame (don't know if he realizes LOOK 585 was designed for climbers).
I also ride LOOK 585 (53cm). I have Dura Ace 53-39 (double ring) and 12-27 (cassettes) combo, and Mavic 700c wheels . It's hilly where I live and ride. I rarely shift it to the 39 ring. 53 and 27 would get over most hills although this gears combo is not very efficient due to chain being stressed by going from outer ring to inner cog; the chain and rear derailleur extentions are at maxima. If on a route your friend have to put it on the 39 ring then my advice to him is avoid that route
