Bike shops discard tons of these and you're doing them a favor just to take them away. In many places bike shops need to flatten these, remove any staples, and cart them to a paper recycler (or pay to have them carted away), so any sucker who takes one for free saves them time and dough.

Would they give 'em away? Never thought of that!

Many commercial districts don't have municipal garbage removal so they have to pay to get rid of them. You might want to call them first so they don't flatten them.

And also mention what size bikes or frames you'll be shipping. Bike boxes come in different sizes depending on the size of the bike that was in it.

Now the next problem is finding a shipping company who will get what you are sending to the destination undamaged.

When I retired I had my LBS box up my old rust bucket, it was transported to it new home by me in a Penske truck. When I unpacked it was just like I dropped it off for packing.

I recently bought an Italian frame on line, the seller did a S**T job of packing the new frame, and fork. UPS did a crap job of handeling the box with care. Box arrived with part of the frame hanging out. It was bent and scratched. UPS believe it or not just left in by my front door.

Frame & fork was returned to seller, I am waiting for a credit card credit, or I will dispute the charge as I did not sign for item, can prove it was sent back, and las it arrived back as seller.

Best advice is pack what you send like a monster gorillas are going to be handeling it, as people in the shipping business don't care if it is a family heirloom, buck of dung, or bicycle frame. To them it is just another box, that gets treated liike a buck of dung.

Also consider that the bike manufacturer hires packaging engineers to figure out how to get their bikes into the smallest possible box. When you try to put your bike into the same box it might not fit. When picking up a box at the bike store, ask for a large one. Also, there is a thread over in C&V showing how to pack a bike to (probably) survive the trip.

You might ask them if they would save the dropout spacers for you as well, they likely just toss them.

Decades ago when I was in retail people would come in asking for bike boxes. We'd say, "no problem, but there's a 5 box minimum". Every once in a while somebody would meekly agree to take 5 boxes if they had to.

That is funny as out west people cruise behind stores looking to steal cardbord to collect the recycling bounty.

+1 Get the plastic fork dropout spacer and the plastic "mushroom" caps that go over the front wheel's axle ends to keep them from poking through the box's sides.

I showed up at the Shiphol AMS airport in NL and bought one there, KLM.

Amtrak requires boxed Bikes , so they have a Box to sell you, but you gotta go get it.

they have free boxes at most bike shops ,they are smaller.
so you have to take more stuff off the bike to make it fit.

buy a lot of packing tape to make 2 boxes into a long one if needed.
