Depends.
Cup & cone style, yes the spindle is a separate piece.
Sealed cartridge - No it's a complete unit
newer External, BB30, etc - the spindle is part of the crank

UN 55 is a sealed cartridge unit where the spindle is integrated not separate. To order you need to know your shell width, threading, crank interface (sq. taper, ISIS, OCTALINK etc) along with spindle length required by the crank you plan on using to get the correct chainline. If you are using it to replace a cup & cone you also have to factor in if the old spindle was asymmetrical.
