How do you tell what BB To Buy
Hi,
I may need a new BB. I have no idea which one to buy. My current bike description (BD Dawes Lightening DLX) just says "Semi Cartridge Bearing ST" would this one be a good replacement?
Shimano Ultegra SM-BBR60 Bottom Bracket
Also, how to know if you have an English or Italian threaded?

Your bike has an English threaded BB shell. Also your BB is square taper. The BB you linked to will not work unless you buy a new crankset. You need something like a Shimano UN55. You'll have to make sure the shell width and spindle lengths match your old BB.

Great. But how did you know this?

It's not an Italian bike so it won't have an Italian threaded BB.
I took a look at the specs page for your bike and saw that it had a square taper crank. The BB name you quoted: "ST" = square taper.
Its also a pretty good guess based on the fact that in a low end bike square taper BBs are common (they used to be the standard back in the day) and Italian threaded BBs are extremely uncommon.
So so you'll have to figure out the shell width (probably 68mm) and the spindle length (could be a number of different values). These are often printed on the BB.
